The Australian team, under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh will eye to clinch the T20 World Cup 2024 and complete their decorated cabin which already has the World Test Championship title as well as the ICC ODI World Cup under their name. However, this time it will be Marsh who be leading the side despite Pat Cummins presence, there have been talks if Marsh is completely fit to feature in all matches.
Meanwhile, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has cleared the air around the Aussie all-rounder’s fitness. It is to be noted that Marsh left India midway during his IPL 2024 stint with the Delhi Capitals after he sustained a hamstring injury. However, Ricky Ponting, the DC Head Coach added that his recovery will take a longer time than expected.
Will Mitchell Marsh bowl in T20 World Cup 2024?
Speaking at the Allan Border Field, Australia Head Coach Andrew McDonald told reporters that Mitchell Marsh will not bowl as of now but will resume bowling just a week prior before they leave for the marquee event. “You probably won’t see him bowl in the next couple of weeks here. It’ll probably happen the week before we leave. And then he’ll be able to ramp that up when we’re over there. We’ll be able to cherry-pick the moments during the tournament where he’ll be useful with the ball. We’ve got some all-round depth in the squad, which gives us good coverage anyway,” Andrew McDonald told reporters.
“[ His recovery was] probably a little slower than expected on the back of the hamstring. But we’ve got plenty of time now that he has been ruled out of the IPL. The first game is just short of a month away now. So ample time for him to get ready. But really positive to see the skipper on the park,” he added.
The 42-year-old meanwhile confirmed that there is no concern around the all-rounder’s match fitness. “No real concern about match fitness. We’ve got a couple of practice games when we get to Trinidad in the support period. So he’ll likely get plenty of match opportunities. And if not, we’ll be able to simulate those through practice, which our coaching staff are pretty good at,” McDonald concluded.
While the T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to start from June 1, Australia, who are placed in Group B, alongside defending champions England, Namibia, Scotland and Oman, will begin their campaign against Oman in Bridgetown, Barbados on June 6.
