In a major development, a Mumbai court has reportedly directed the police to investigate the molestation allegations filed by the social media influencer Sapna Gill against the Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw in 2023. With that, his participation in the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with Delhi Capitals could come under some jeopardy with a potential jail time looming.
As per the report from the PTI, SC Tayde, the Metropolitan Magistrate, instructed the police to submit a report of its inquiry on the Prithvi Shaw and Sapna Gill case by June 19. Also, the plea from Gill in regards to seeking action against the police for not registering an FIR against Shaw was dismissed by the Mumbai court.
It was last year when Sapna Gill had complained against Prithvi Shaw and his friend Ashish Yadav for allegedly molesting and assaulting her with a baseball bat. She had sought registration of an FIR under IPC sections 354 (molestation), 509 (Word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means).
After claiming that the police didn't register an FIR against Prithvi Shaw, Sapna Gill moved to the Mumbai court to have the case registered. Although the police had told the court the allegations from Gill against Shaw were “false and unfounded.”
While Prithvi Shaw has denied any wrongdoing, he had also filed a complaint of his own about the matter, and following an investigation, the police arrested Sapna Gill and her friend Shobit Yadav. As of this writing, Sapna Gill is currently out of jail on bail.
