During the IPL 2024 auction, when a young Mumbai Indians fan reportedly shouted to the team owner Akash Ambani about Rohit Sharma’s future at the franchise, he responded that the former MI captain would bat for them next season. The moment happened at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai where IPL teams signed a whole host of players from the auction.

Mumbai Indians added six players to their squad from the IPL 2024 auction with Gerald Coetzee, the rising sensation from South Africa, being the costliest at INR 5 crore. The MI team management also signed two more overseas players, the fast bowling duo from Sri Lanka, namely Nuwan Thushara and Dilshan Madushanka for INR 4.8 crore and INR 4.6 crore, respectively.

A user who goes by the name of Shivani Shukla (@iShivani_Shukla) took to her account on the social media platform X to post the interaction between a young MI fan and the team owner Akash Ambani in regards to Rohit Sharma. It read, “There’s this young MI fan, who shouted, 'Rohit Sharma ko wapis lao,' during the auction break and Akash Ambani coolly responded with, 'Chinta mat kro, wo batting krega’ It was a huge moment here!”

Mahela Jayawerdene, the Global Head of Cricket for Mumbai Indians, spoke to JioCinema on the sidelines of the IPL 2024 Auction about the value Rohit Sharma brings to the franchise. His comments came after fans were concerned about the future of Rohit Sharma with Mumbai Indians after they replaced him with Hardik Pandya in the leadership role.

He was quoted as saying, “Having Ro (Rohit Sharma) in the team, on and off the field to guide the next generation is very important for us. He has been absolutely brilliant. I have worked very closely with Ro. He is a fabulous individual and I am sure he will be part of the legacy who will guide that through.” 

“Mumbai have had that in the past too with Sachin (Tendulkar), who played with the youngsters. He gave the leadership to someone else and made sure Mumbai Indians was going in the right direction. It’s the same thing. We had this conversation and everyone is buying into that, so, it’s for us to look forward to the next season,” added Mahela Jayawerdene.
