Poland's Iga Swiatek swept Tunisian star player Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) to clinch US Open title and win her third Grand Slam extending her historic streak. The 21-year-old prevailed in the thrilling second-set tiebreak, becoming the first top-seeded woman to win the US Open since recently retired Serena Williams in 2014.
With this win, Swiatek sealed her first Grand Slam title on a hard court, and also became the first Polish woman to win the US Open. Following her historic win Swiatek also became the world number one ranked, which saw her winning 37 consecutive matches, including the French Open.
The reigning world number one was seen wearing a customized Asics jacket during the US Open trophy presentation ceremony. Her jacket has three stars (for the three Grand Slam titles) and '1GA' for the US Open trophy. The picture of this is now doing rounds on social media.
After winning her third Grand Slam title, Swiatek reflected on the significance of this win for Poland as she stressed upon on staying united and support ourselves. "I am pretty happy that I can kind of unite people with our sport. I am proud that Tennis is getting more and more popular at home."
Earlier, she notched up 37-match winning streak, the longest ever in the WTA this century. She has also clinched all seven of the finals she reached this year. With her US Open victory, Swiatek has now cleared 10,000 WTA rankings points this year, the most since Serena Williams in 2013.
The Polish tennis star gave a cheeky response after receiving $2.6 million cheque for winning the US Open. "I am really glad this is not in cash," she hilariously responded.
Her opponent in the final and World number 2 Ons Jabeur also took a jibe at US Open 2022 champion by saying that she does not like her very much but admitted that Swiatek deserved the win.
"She deserves to win today. I don’t like her very much right now, but it’s okay. Just an amazing two weeks, to be honest with you. Backing up my final in Wimbledon. I know we all are going to keep working hard and we will get better sometime soon," concluded Jabaur.
