After the successful conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the action is set to shift towards the Women’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in October this year. While Bangladesh are set to host the T20 edition of the marquee tournament, seeing the ongoing political unrest in the country, reports suggest that the tournament could be moved to a neutral venue in UAE.

However, these updates follow the immediate flying out of PM Sheikh Hasina. Her house was even vandalised, along with the house of former Bangladesh cricketer Mashrafe Mortaze, which is located in the Narail constituency of Khulna district of south-western Bangladesh. However, India, Sri Lanka and UAE were stated to be the possible venues for the marquee tournament, seeing the similar time zones.

However, a development on the same is yet to be confirmed but an ICC source informed TOI, “If the tournament is moved out of Bangladesh, India are strong contenders to host it.” An ICC spokesperson told TOI, “The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies, and our own independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants.”

BCB seeks Bangladesh Army’s assurance to host Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

While there might be speculations of the tournament moving out of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also sought for security assurance from the country’s Army Chief for hosting the tournament. According to a report published by Cricbuzz, the BCB has written to Bangladesh’s Army Chief of Staff general, Waker-Uz-Zaman seeking security assurance.

The 2024 Women’s World Cup is set to be played from October 3 to 20 in Sylhet and Mirpur. However, the warm-up round is scheduled to begin from September 27.
