National record holder and India’s top long jumper Jeswin Aldrin on Thursday finished 11 th  at the ongoing World Athletics Championships after securing his first long jump final berth on August 23. Aldrin finished a 7.77m jump in the final, which was the lone legal mark he crossed at the key stage.

 

Talking about Aldrin’s performance in the final, his 7.77m jump came in his third attempt, which led to his elimination as only top eight remain to compete in the final three rounds. However, he had fouled her first two attempts earlier in the day in the final of the event. His best jump of 8.0m at the showpiece event came in the qualification round to be the last man to qualify in the final.

 

On the other hand, his compatriot Murali Sreeshankar had earlier suffered an elimination as he failed to enter the final, producing a best jump of 7.74m in the qualification round on Wednesday. Notably, Aldrin became just the second Indian male long jumper to qualify for the final of the World Athletics Championships after Murali Sreeshankar, who had finished seventh in the 2022 edition of the event in USA.

 

Apart from the Jeswin Aldrin, Ram Baboo finished 27th in men’s 35km race walk event, clocking 2:39.07s on Thursday. However, Baboo failed to break his national record, which he had set clocking 2:29.56s.  Other than Ram Baboo, Parul Chaudhary also qualified for the finals in women’s steeplechase after finishing fifth in her heat with a personal best of 9:24.29s.
