The 36-year-old Serbian, Novak Djokovic avenged his Wimbledon 2023 Final loss as he registered his first win in the United States since 2021. The Serb came from behind to lift the Cincinnati Open 2023 title, beating World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 at the Centre Court of the Linder Family Tennis Centre in Ohio.

 

This loss however did not sit well with the World No. 1 as he was seen break down in tears. The Spaniard, who held a championship point at one point, fought hard as he took the first set 7-5 and was sitting on top at the start of second set. Soon after this loss, Alcaraz was in tears and paid tribute to his team and his brother.

The 20-year-old during the post-match presentation said, “To my team, we are working really really hard to stay in this stage, to play these kinds of matches, these finals. I’m grateful to have a team like you guys, to work with you. I want to say thank you not only in the professional part, but even in the personal part you are a great example for me that I learn from every day so I want to say thank you to all of you.”

 

It is to be noted that Novak Djokovic, who was playing his first tournament on US soil in two years, secured his third Cincinnati championship in six years. With this win, Djokovic also earned his 95 th  career title, surpassing Ivan Lendl for third among men in professional era.
