The WPL 2024 match between UP Warriorz and Royal Challengers Bangalore Women saw the latter register a convincing 23-run win to finish their home leg on a high. However, the RCB Women finished the game on their side, Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu’s dismissal was the talking point of the match.

The Sri Lanka batter, who was dismissed in the seventh over as UP Warriorz were chasing 199-run target, was left disappointed along with her skipper Alyssa Healy in the middle. Not only them, even some of the former cricketers from around shared their take on the controversial dismissal. Among many was former India cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra, who was looking forward to hear the hawkeye explanation.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Aakash Chopra wrote, “This is a leg-spin delivery. The ball pitches really close to the foot. Hawkeye’s projection takes it as a straight ball/googly ….. shows hitting the middle stump. Would love to hear Hawkeye’s explanation for this. Do more errors happen when the ball is pitching really close to the impact on the pads? Remember Joe Root’s LBW was a half-volley too”.

Smriti Mandhana-led RCB Women opted to review this decision with the DRS returning with three reds for ‘hitting wickets’, ‘point of impact’, and ‘line of the pitch’.

We are pretty frustrated about: Jon Lewis on Athapaththu’s controversial dismissal

UP Warriorz coach Jon Lewis also opened up on Chamari Athapaththu’s controversial dismissal in the match against RCB Women. Lewis did not mince words as he called it a “fascinating dismissal”. “You watch the ball with naked eye, and you think it might pitch in line, just maybe,” he said after the game.

“Then you look at the ball rotating and well, it’s rotating like a leg-spinner. There are not many leg-spinners that go towards that (other) side. It was a fascinating dismissal and a massive turning point for us in that game,” he further added.
