Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young Indian cricketer achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Indian player to score 1000 Test runs in 2024. Not only this, but he also became the youngest Indian to cross the 1000-run mark. The previous record was held by Dilip Vengsarkar who scored 1000 Test runs at the age of 23. This record feat was achieved earlier by few players starting with West Indies legend Garfield Sobers in 1958 when he scored 1193 runs. After 45 years, South Africa's Graeme Smith scored 1198 runs in 2023, AB de Villiers scored 1008 runs in 2005, followed by Alastair Cook scoring 1013 runs in 2006.
In the second day of the second Test match against New Zealand, Yashasvi Jaiswal appeared to be in good form, but was out for 30 runs, further creating hard time for India. Jaiswal scored over 700 runs in a savage display of form against England earlier this year, but he hasn't been as good since. In the Test series against Bangladesh, he did manage to achieve three fifties, but he was unable to turn the starts into a significant one. Despite of low-score dismissal, Jaiswal proves that he is a promising player for India in the current generation.
New Zealand stay on top in 2nd Test match
Despite Jaiswal reaching the milestone, his inning was short-lived, and India's top-order collapsed in the morning session, leaving New Zealand on top. The host ended the journey with 107/7 at lunch, leaving them to trail for another 152 runs in the first inning.
On Day 2 of the match, New Zealand's spinners went on the rampage, leaving India reeling at 99-6. With Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease, India got off to a 16-1 start. Before Gill was out LBW to Mitchell Santner, both batsmen received starts and led India to 50. After missing a full throw, Virat Kohli was dismissed for a single run by the spinner. India was in serious difficulty as Glenn Phillips intervened and ousted Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant before Santner came back to eliminate Sarfaraz. As of writing, NZ had gained a lead of 301 runs over India.
