India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has reportedly confirmed his availability for Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy clash against Jammu and Kashmir, set to begin from January 23 at Wankhede Stadium. The decision of the 23-year-old comes after the Team India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, along with several former cricketers and members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reiterated on the importance to play domestic cricket.

Notably, Jaiswal, who opened for India alongside KL Rahul in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, finished as the highest run-getter for the visitors with 391 runs. Moreover, he finished as the second highest run-scorer in BGT 2024-25 after Travis Head, who amassed 448 runs at an average of 56.00.

The 23-year-old’s confirmation boasts Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy lineup as they are placed third in Elite A Group with 22 points from five matches. Moreover, his decision to participate in domestic tournament comes to add to his personal preparation ahead of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2024-25, which is scheduled to be played in Pakistan and the UAE in February-March.

The update on Jaiswal’s participation comes after an MCA official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express, “He has informed Mumbai coach Omkar Salvi that he is available for the next round of the Ranji Trophy. The selection committee will pick the Mumbai team in the coming days.” Jaiswal has so far managed to score 833 runs in nine Ranji matches at an average of 59.50, which includes four centuries and two fifties.

While Jaiswal is likely to play the Ranji Trophy match, Sarfaraz Khan will be unavailable due to a rib injury. However, the 27-year-old is set to report at the National Cricket Academy for his rehabilitation. “He has injured one of his ribs and he has informed us that he won’t be playing the next Ranji Trophy game. As he is contracted with the BCCI, the National Cricket Academy will do his medical assessment and inform us,” the MCA official stated.
