The Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar commented on the recent run of low scores of Shreyas Iyer in Tests, stating that it’s not ideal to point fingers at just one player. During the recently concluded South Africa Test series, the Indian batting lineup struggled on tough pitches, with only Virat Kohli and KL Rahul registering decent scores on the board.
In front of a formidable bowling attack of South Africa during the two-match Test series, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were the only two players to score more than 100 runs with an average of over 20 for India. At the SuperSport Park in Centurion and the Newlands in Cape Town, Kohli scored 172 in four innings at an average of 43.00 with a fifty, while Rahul got 113 runs in three innings at an average of 37.66, which included an impressive first innings hundred.
Shreyas Iyer scored only 41 runs across four innings at an average of 13.66, but he had the opportunity to hit the winning four during the second Test match against South Africa. This was the first-ever Test win for the India cricket team at the Newlands in Cape Town, which led to them drawing the two-match series 1-1 against the Proteas.
In his interview with Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying about the lack of runs from the Indian middle-order batter in his recent Test appearances, “Shreyas Iyer is not the only player who failed because it's not easy for any batter on these pitches.
"If you see, barring Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, no one else scored too many runs. You cannot point fingers at just one player. So I feel the selection committee will also think that he should probably be given more chances, ” he added.
