Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian hockey team for winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. India, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Singh, took down Spain in the bronze-medal match in Paris with the scoreline of 2-1 and clinched their second consecutive Olympics bronze. Earlier, the Men in Blue were defeated by Germany 3-2 and they crashed out of the race to clinch gold.
After their win, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked to the victorious team and congratulated the team for their win. In their conversation over a phonecall, PM Modi addressed Harmanpreet as Sarpanch Sahab and said that the team has made the entire country proud. He told the Indian team, “Heartiest congratulations to you and the entire team. You guys have made the entire country proud. If you remember I had told you after the Tokyo Olympics that you broke the streak of losses in the Olympics.”
He added, “I have complete faith that you will bring back the golden age of hockey in India.” Along with it, Indian PM also congratulated PR Sreejesh, who played his last international game. He said, “Sreejesh, congratulations to you. You retired, but you have to prepare our new team. Every single kid in India who knows hockey will remember you and what you did for the team. You are an example. You guys did not lose morale even after your loss and made a comeback and went about your business.”
PM Modi continued, “Your 10-man team effort against Great Britain in the quarterfinals will be remembered by every hockey fan in the country. It will be discussed actively in the world of hockey in the days to come.” Notably, heading into the Paris Olympics 2024, team India was already the most successful hockey team in the history of the sport. Overall, the Indian hockey team has won eight gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
