Argentina great Lionel Messi called Catalan journalist Gerard Romero for making false claims about his alleged interaction with FC Barcelona president Joan Laporata at the Ballon d'Or 2023 ceremony. The Inter Miami CF star won his record eight Ballon d'Or award this year over Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.

During this ceremony, Messi reportedly met up with FC Barcelona president Joan Laporata and the duo discus sed a possible date for Barcelona to pay tribute to Messi as journalist Gerard Romero. But after the event, Messi denied these claims on Instagram and shared a screenshot of Gerard Romero’s tweet about the report and posted, "You're lying... once more..." with a Pinocchio nose emoji.

Earlier in the event, Messi also slammed streamer Ibai Llanos on his Twitch stream. Messi joined the stream briefly but didn’t want to talk and then criticised Llanos for not respecting privacy. He said, “I’m not going to answer you anymore because you make everything public and I don’t like it…the Ballon d’Or? Now you are changing the topic you son of a b*tch.”

Talking about Messi’s comments, the former Barcelona star was annoyed at Ibai as he had previously read out a private text conversation between the two on one of his live streams.
