Former India cricketer Yusuf Pathan, who made his debut in politics, defeated his opponent from Congress, the multiple time sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Yusuf Pathan, who was a newcomer in politics is poised to unseat the five-term stalwart from the Baharampur seat.
Pathan, who was handed a seat from one of the parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal, Baharampur, from Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), registered a comprehensive win with a significant lead in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Here the former India cricketer once again proved himself as the “big match player” after a successful triumph.
After his win, Pathan thanked everyone for standing by his side and believing in him. “I congratulate all of you who have been with me. I am happy. It is not only my win but also of all the workers. Records are made to be broken. I respect Adhir Ranjan. I will continue to do so. I will make a sports academy first so that they can make a career. I will also work for industries. I will be living here and working for the people. I will also be in Gujarat as my family is there. I have got a new family in Baharampur (Berhampore). I talked to Didi (Mamata Banerjee). They are happy,” Yusuf said during media interaction.
Apart from the defeat, his opponent from Congress also extended his best wishes for Pathan. “I tried but I lost. Congratulations to Yusuf Patha. But there’s no defeat in politics. Today, someone will win, other day the opposition will win,” Adhir Rajan Chowdhury said while speaking to ABP Ananda.

Yusuf Pathan’s brother, former Indian all-rounder turned commentator Irfan Pathan also did not stay back and was among the first to congratulate Yusuf. The younger brother, who was present with his brother, took to X to congratulate him.
“Lala @iamyusufpathan With unyielding confidence in your noble cause, you embarked on the daunting journey to triumph over seasoned politicians. Armed with integrity and unwavering resolve, may your noble intentions translate into transformative actions, enriching the lives of our nation’s citizens. Mera bhai jeet Gaya,” Irfan Pathan wrote.
