Marcus Trescothick, the English assistant coach, has backed opener Zak Crawley to come good after a disappointing tour to New Zealand, where he was dismissed cheaply on six occasions by pacer Matt Henry. The 48-year-old remarked that its been a challenging Test series for Zak Crawley with the bat, but he expects him to find a way to resurrect his career going into the year 2025, and the team management will help him get there.
Notably, in the three-match Test series against New Zealand, Zak Crawley scored just 52 runs from six innings at an average of 8.66 with Matt Henry having his number right throughout. In their overall battle, Henry has picked up the wicket of Crawley eight times in his career, but despite that, in the ongoing series, England are currently 2-0 up after winning the first two Test matches convincingly.
Zak Crawley will find a way and we'll help him find a way: Marcus Trescothick
In the third Test match, which is currently ongoing at the Seddon Park in Hamilton, New Zealand set a ridiculous target of 658 runs for England to chase in over days, and before the close of play on day three, they picked up two quick wickets. Zak Crawley was trapped in front of the stumps lbw by Matt Henry for five, while Tim Southee picked up his first wicket in the farewell match for New Zealand by castling Ben Duckett for four runs.
In his post-match press conference, Marcus Trescothick discussed the dismal run of Zak Crawley in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand, and said, “I don't want to give you too much about how he goes about it in the changing room because it's the private area of what we have… but he's a strong character. Although it's challenging when it's like this, when someone gets you under the pump, it's tough, but he'll find a way. And we'll help him find a way to get back to that point.”
Moreover, Trescothick also stated that the poor scoring streak of Crawley isn’t due to the finger fracture he had sustained in the summer against West Indies at home.
