Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has named wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera as their new ODI skipper and Kusal Mendis as his deputy. 30-year-old Kusal Perera has replaced Dimuth Karunaratne after the later missed his placed from the squad in the format. Reports had already speculated this change as SLC is keen to groom a new captain ahead of the 2023 World Cup and wants to give opportunity to young players. The change came to the fore after Sri Lanka announced an 18-man squad for their upcoming 3-match ODI series against Bangladesh. The series will be played in Dhaka from May 23.

Chamika Karunaratne & Shiran Fernando receive maiden call-up, Mathews misses out

Sri Lanka Cricket announced their squad for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh on Wednesday. While Kusal Perera has been named the as the skipper of the side, Kusal Mendis is provided with the opportunity to take over the duties of vice-captain. Several senior cricketer, including Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal, have been dropped from the squad which features some new faces.
