After a disappointing start to the season, Sunrisers Hyderabad remain at the bottom of the table with 5 losses and one win out of the six matches they have played so far. Even in their last match in Delhi against Chennai Super Kings, they put on a good total of 171 runs on the board. However, the side failed to defend it and lost the game in the 19th over itself. In this season’s IPL, David Warner is averaging 32.16 with a total of 193 runs across six games.
The decision to change the captaincy came in after David Warner took “full responsibility” of the side’s loss to CSK. Warner admitted that he “batted very slowly and was left frustrated when his shots were finding fielders everywhere”. Talking about his captaincy replacement, Williamson, the Kiwi has managed SRH before in 2018 when Warner was suspended in the Cape Town ball-tampering incident.
Williamson continued to lead the side until the end of the 2019 season. Warner was handed back the captaincy in 2020, and the side ended 3rd in that season, losing to Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2. Notably, it was Warner who had led the team to their maiden IPL title in 2016, but this time around, the fortunes do not seem to favour him.
“The team management has also made the decision that they will be changing their overseas combination for tomorrow’s match against Rajasthan Royals,” stated SRH. After this statement, there is quite a possibility that by changing the overseas players’ combination, Warner might not find his place in the playing XI.
Let us see how Twitterati reacted to SRH’s decision:
David Warner is one of the greatest IPL batsman without any doubt, the way he's been consistent in this league is just next level. Literally led from the front all these years. Won SRH the trophy in 2016. Unreal disrespect after one bad season.

Warner is one of 4 batsmen in IPL history to average 40+ with SR 140+. Absolute legend of IPL, who won SRH their only title. Out of form this season & a ballsy move by SRH to not only strip Warner of captaincy but also announcing openly Warner's going to be dropped. I'm stunned!

Warner dropped from captaincy. What a disrespect! SRH should learn from RCB and stick with their captain no matter what. 😡
