The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar, has reportedly decided to remove Suryakumar Yadav from the T20I captaincy and completely drop him from future T20I squads. Despite leading India to a historic T20 World Cup triumph in March 2026, a senior BCCI official confirmed via reports in The Indian Express and Hindustan Times that the board has run out of patience with the veteran's extended lean patch. They are looking to implement a fresh roadmap for the shortest format heading into the upcoming bilateral tours of Ireland and England. As a pure batter, Yadav maintains a world-class T20I average of 43.4. However, upon taking the captaincy, his average plummeted to 28.65, showing a notable inability to balance leadership with his signature 360-degree batting style.
During the recently concluded IPL 2026 season, Yadav managed only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. His World Cup output was also relatively subdued, yielding 242 runs across 9 innings, heavily carried by a single unbeaten 84 against the USA. Beyond mere numbers, reports have emerged that the BCCI management was highly dissatisfied with Yadav’s communication regarding his fitness. He reportedly carried a wrist injury throughout the T20 World Cup campaign without fully disclosing its severity to the medical team and management. This breach of transparency, paired with subsequent fitness issues, severely weakened his backing within the board. In a frantic bid to prove his form and fitness, Yadav bypassed a post-IPL rest period to play for the Triumph Knights in the T20 Mumbai League. However, this gesture came too late to shift the board's momentum.

Shreyas Iyer - Ishan Kishan frontrunners in T20I captaincy, post Suryakumar Yadav’s stint
Reports from India Today indicate that while Shreyas Iyer is the outright frontrunner to succeed Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan has emerged as a major dark horse in India's T20I leadership race. The selection committee and team management are mapping out two contrasting profiles to head the transition toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Shreyas Iyer is heavily tipped by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar to take over the mantle immediately, starting with the upcoming tour of Ireland. Iyer has reinforced his leadership pedigree by captaining the Punjab Kings and managing high-stakes environments in the IPL. Experts like Ricky Ponting have openly backed his tactical composure. Although reports from News18 hint that Head Coach Gautam Gambhir has slight reservations, reportedly favoring Sanju Samson, Iyer's historic chemistry with Gambhir during their IPL days keeps him at the forefront of the discussion.

Ishan Kishan’s addition to the leadership loop represents a massive turnaround after his previous struggles with national contracts. Kishan has arguably been India's most prolific and consistent T20I batter in the 2026 calendar year, heavily carrying the top order with explosive strike rates. Kishan proved his leadership abilities by captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad during the first half of IPL 2026 in the absence of Pat Cummins. As a wicketkeeper-batsman who opens the innings, appointing Kishan solves multi-dimensional squad balancing issues, guaranteeing him a permanent slot in the XI. According to senior journalists, if Shreyas Iyer lands the captaincy, Ishan Kishan or Tilak Varma is highly likely to be named his vice-captain to set up a collaborative, long-term leadership group.
