BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia shut down all the rumours around Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Notably, Sharma’s future in ODI cricket has been under spotlight off late. A key review meeting in Mumbai on September 3 discussed India’s ODI roadmap, recent performances and the availability of senior players, with the batter’s place in the long-term plan. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia played down retirement speculation surrounding the former India captain, pointing to his recent form. Reports have also suggested that his impressive century at Lord’s helped put retirement discussions on hold. 

Following the meeting, Saikia offered a clear response when asked about Rohit’s future, saying,  “Rohit Sharma is playing superbly in all matches. What more do you want? In the last match, he scored 130-140 runs. So why is there speculation? I do not want to give fodder to the speculators,” Saikia told the reporters after the meeting. The statement comes as India begins building towards the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The opener currently remains active only in ODIs after retiring from Test and T20I cricket, making his future in the 50-over format particularly significant. For now, the BCCI’s message appears to be that Rohit’s performances, rather than speculation, will determine how long his ODI career continues.

Rohit Sharma’s retirement rumours surfaced shortly before the third and final ODI between India and England at Lord’s, putting fresh uncertainty around the veteran batter’s future in the 50-over format. The speculation gained attention even during the match commentary, with former India head coach Ravi Shastri and others discussing the possibility of Rohit calling time on his international career. However, Rohit responded emphatically with the bat, scoring a remarkable 138 runs in India’s unsuccessful chase of England’s 388-run target.

Despite the defeat, Rohit’s performance provided a strong answer to questions about whether he still had a future in ODI cricket. His century showed that he remains capable of producing match-defining performances at the highest level. The retirement talk, however, did not completely disappear after the match. At 39, Rohit is now playing only ODI cricket after stepping away from Test and T20I cricket, making every series an important part of the discussion surrounding his future.
