Rohit Sharma's childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, confirmed that Rohit's primary motivation to continue playing is to win the ODI World Cup. He stated that he believes Rohit Sharma doesn’t need to prove his fitness or his worth to anyone, as he is aware Rohit will 100% play for the 2027 ODI World Cup. He defended Rohit against critics and former selectors, stating he still has the hunger and determination to contribute, pointing out the fact that the former Indian Captain not playing any other format doesn’t mean he is resting, but he is practising hard each day to keep himself up.

“Being a coach, I don’t think he needs to prove anything to anyone. He badly wants to win the ODI World Cup. I have spoken to him, and he is very categorical about what he wants in his career. I don’t think he needs to prove his fitness. Despite the age factor, he is still fit enough,” Lad told PTI videos during an interview.
He also pointed out the fact that Rohit brings immense experience and leadership to the team, and he shouldn't be judged purely on his age. But Rohit’s current hamstring injury during IPL matches has concerned selectors over his fitness and workload management, bringing his participation in the 2027 World Cup under scrutiny.
Dinesh Lad replies to Indian former selector Saba Karim’s criticism of Rohit Sharma’s fitness
Former Indian wicket keeper and selector Saba Karim has voiced his opinion on Rohit Sharma’s participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup, amongst all the questions being raised and decisions criticised. He said Rohit needs to work on himself and his fitness a lot to make the cut for the squad. He said Rohit needs a lot of ‘heavy lifting’ to convince the selectors’ watchful eyes. Dinesh Lad came up front to defend Rohit Sharma and his fitness, giving a reply to the criticisms he is facing.
“Why are the next six months crucial only for Rohit? It’s crucial for all players. Everyone needs to play well to retain their place in the team. I have a 100 per cent guarantee that Rohit will definitely play the 50-over World Cup in 2027. I don’t think Rohit needs to prove anything to anyone. He has retired from Tests and T20Is, not ODIs. And in whatever ODI matches he had played last, he did well. I don’t think there is any pressure on him.” Lad said defending Hitman.
Rohit Sharma will be undergoing a fitness test on June 8 before BCCI officially announces he is fit for playing in the upcoming three match ODI series against Afghanistan.
