During the first Test match against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the Indian cricket team registered a commanding win by 280 runs, to take a 1-0 in the two-match series. Following the big Test win for India, Basit Ali, the former Pakistan cricketer, analysed the batting performance of Yashasvi Jaiswal, stating that he played “bonker” shots to get dismissed in both the innings before asking when would he be able to learn to do the opposite.

For the unversed, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a valuable fifty in the first innings for India, resurrecting the team’s innings after they had lost a few early wickets. He was dismissed for 56 runs off 118 balls in the first innings before fending a ball from Nahid Rana in the slip cordon, while his performance in the second innings was a lot left to be desired, scoring 10 off 17 before slashing a wide one from the same bowler through to the wicket-keeper.

Usko seekhna chahiye, ab nahi seekhega toh kab seekhega: Basit Ali on Yashasvi Jaiswal

On his YouTube channel, Basit Ali wasn’t impressed with the shot selection from Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He was quoted as saying by NDTV, “Yashasvi Jaiswal played bonker shots in both the innings. For me, this match is zero for Jaiswal. He is my favourite as well. But usko seekhna chahiye, ab nahi seekhega toh kab seekhega (He should learn. If he doesn't learn now, when will he?).”

The former Pakistan cricketer also alluded to how Yashasvi Jaiswal needs to carry his form in the Test format, and said, “When you have the form, grab it. Don't get out playing poor shots. This is a matter of worry for India.” Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal is the first batter in the history of Test format to get past 750 runs in first 10 innings at home, apart from notching up 1000 runs in first 10 Test matches.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is now slated to play the second Test match for India against Bangladesh at the Green Park in Kanpur, from September 27 onwards, where he will be looking to get yet another big score in his young career.
