AC Milan are expected to leave the iconic San Siro after the Italian club reportedly purchased land to build a new stadium. As per the Italian press, the talks between AC Milan, the San Donato municipality, and its residents will enter a decisive phase next week, which could lead to a building permit being issued to the club.
It has been reported that AC Milan have acquired a plot the size of 256,000 metres in the San Donato municipality to the southeast of the city of Milan, which is around 15 km away from San Siro. In September of 2023, the Italian club had announced setting their sights on building a 70,000-capacity stadium, but they haven’t given a possible date in regards to its inauguration.
Despite all the pointers suggesting that AC Milan are going to leave San Siro in some time, the iconic football stadium will have Inter Milan play its matches for the foreseeable future. Notably, San Siro is set to host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics in 2026.
Will AC Milan and Inter Milan end up sharing San Siro for home matches?
San Siro, officially known as the Giuseppe-Meazza Stadium, was built in 1926, and it is shared by AC Milan and Inter Milan for their home matches. But after nearly 100 years, the iconic football stadium is no longer meeting the needs of the Italian clubs, although it was modernised before the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
A few years ago, both AC Milan and Inter Milan wanted to knock down the San Siro to build a stadium adjacent to it. However, the joint project was abandoned after the city-owned San Siro was deemed to be of “cultural interest.”
