India’s Amit Panghal defeated China’s Liu Chuang 5-0 in the quarterfinal at the ongoing World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers, underway in Bangkok, Thailand. The 28-year-old with his win not only entered the semifinals of the World Boxing Olympic Qualifiers, but also earned India’s fifth Paris Olympics quota.
Furthermore, he became the only second Indian male after Nishant Dev to confirm the Paris Olympics berth. The Indian boxer, who received a by in the first round, he won the next two rounds to stay in contention for the Paris Olympics spot at the final qualifying event. He then got the better of his Chinese opponent to confirm his Olympics spot.
Earlier at the Olympic Qualifiers, Nishant Dev confirmed the spot after he defeated Moldova’s Vasile Cebotari 5-0 in the men’s 71kg category. Panghal will now join the list of star athletes which includes the likes of Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) along with Nishant Dev.
Speaking of the other Indian boxers in the Olympic Qualifiers, Sachin Siwach (men’s 57kg) and Jaismine Lamboria (women’s 57kg) are still in contention to earn the Paris Olympics spot. While Sachin will take on Kyrgyz boxer Munarbek Seiitbek Uulu for a third-place playoff, Jaismine Lamboria will take in Marine Camara of Mali later today.
