India’s young wrestling star Antim Panghal went all power to reach the semifinals of the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade on Wednesday, 20 September. The youngster who shocked reigning champion Olivia Dominique Parrish on her way to the semifinals, earlier today went down against her Belarusian opponent.  

The two-time U20 champion could not surpass the challenges of two-time World Champion Vanesa Kaladzinskaya in the 53kg semifinals of the World Wrestling Championships. The 19-year-old however will remain in contention for a medal finish as she takes on her opponent in the bronze medal match. The young sensation will also be fighting for her Paris Olympics quota in her bronze medal match.

Earlier in the day, Panghal dominated over World No. 2 and reigning champion Dominique Parrish 3-2 in her first round. She also surpassed her quarterfinal challenge, outclassing Roksana M Zasina of Poland 10-0.

Five Indian women wrestlers and 10 men’s freestyle wrestlers have already made an exit from the Belgrade Championships and Antim is the sole contender fighting for a Paris quota as well as India’s medal at the World Wrestling Championships 2023. It is to be noted that no Indian women has won a gold at the Championships.
