On Tuesday, October 31, Australia confirmed that they will not bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2034, to open the door for Saudi Arabia to bring the prestigious event to their country. Just hours before the deadline for declarations of interest from FIFA, Football Australia decided to not go ahead with their plans for the men’s national team tournament, instead focusing their attention on preparing a bid for other football tournaments.

Earlier in the year, Australia successfully hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, alongside New Zealand, which was a record-breaking event in the women’s football history. The tournament had nearly two million people watching the matches across Australia and New Zealand, showcasing their passion and commitment for the beautiful game down under.
The statement from Football Australia on their website read, “We have explored the opportunity to bid to host the FIFA World Cup™ and - having taken all factors into consideration - we have reached the conclusion not to do so for the 2034 competition.”
While conveying their decision to not bid for the FIFA World Cup 2034, Australia have reiterated their interest in hosting AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 and FIFA Club World Cup 2029.
“Instead, we believe we are in a strong position to host the oldest women’s international competition in the world, the AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ 2026, and then welcome the greatest teams in world football for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup™,” the statement from Football Australia further read.
