However, day after his appointment, reports surfaced that the PCB will re-appoint Babar Azam as the skipper of the side. This development was reported by a Pakistani journalist, Qadir Khawaja.
It is to be noted that Babar Azam stepped down from the captaincy role of all three formats after Pakistan’s dismal show in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The team under his leadership finished at fifth spot with four wins from nine games and failed to secure semifinals berth of the tournament.
However, he was urged to continue as the skipper in the longest format of the game, the 29-year-old did not show any interest. Soon after, PCB named Shan Masood as the Test skipper while Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as the T20I skipper of the side. Under the new captaincy, Pakistan is yet to win a series as they lost the Test series down under and suffered a five-match T20I series loss against New Zealand under Afridi’s reign.
The 29-year-old Pakistan batter took over the captaincy reigns in 2019. Under his leadership, Pakistan played the final of the T20 World in 2022. He served as the captain in a total of 20 Tests, 43 ODIs and 71 T20Is and managed to win 10 Tests, 26 ODIs and 42 T20Is matches respectively.
