The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to reinstate middle-order batter and Kolkata Kn ight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer's central contract after dropping him alongside wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan. The BCCI released the contract for their pool of players on February 28, 2024, and specifically mentioned that Iyer and Kishan 'were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations.'
The decision occurred in the aftermath of reports and speculation about the aforementioned players skipping domestic cricket and only focusing on international cricket and the Indian Premier League. Kishan didn't feature in any of Jharkhand's games in the 2024 season but Iyer represented Mumbai once, ahead of the England series before missing the quarter-final.
Later, this knockout fixture led to the termination of Iyer's contract termination after which he has now played back-to-back Ranji games and was crucial in Mumbai winning the final against Vidharba. As per Revsportz, Iyer didn’t ignore the BCCI order as he suffered back spasms after facing 60 balls and went to the KKR academy in Mumbai to build his workload.
The report further revealed after information surfaced, there has been a feeling within the BCCI that his central contract should be reinstated. Iyer will now be in action for the KKR, who start their IPL 2024 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23.
