After the ODI World Cup 2023 finished on Sunday, November 19, the speculations around the careers of the captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were running rampant in the cricketing circles. But, a BCCI source has reportedly quashed all the rumours in a massive reveal, stating that both the senior players of the Indian cricket team are given the option to keep on representing the country in T20Is and the upcoming T20 World Cup if they want.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were the top two leading run scorers in the CWC 2023, helping Team India reach the final after winning 10 straight matches in the round-robin and knockout stages. In the 11 matches of the flagship tournament, Kohli put together 765 runs at an average of 95.62 with three centuries and six fifties, while Rohit got 597 at an average of 54.27 with one century and three fifties.

As per the report from Times Now, the BCCI source spoke about how the governing body of cricket in India has left the decision about the T20I careers of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in their own hands. They were quoted as saying, “Rohit and Virat can play T20Is and T20 World Cup next year if they want. We can’t remove the highest run scorer of the ODI World Cup. They are both our biggest players.”

“If Rohit decides to leave T20Is, then only Hardik will captain the side; otherwise he will be his deputy,” the BCCI source said. Also, it was also stated that if Rohit decides to leave T20Is, then Kohli will open in his place.

Notably, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are not part of the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia starting from November 23 onwards. As per the rumours, these two senior players are not expected to take part in the T20I series on the tour of South Africa beginning December 10, which will give them the opportunity to play only three T20Is against Afghanistan at home early next year before the IPL and the T20 World Cup 2024 comes around.
