The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the ten Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are set to hold a meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday, July 31 to discuss some of the key topics around the cash-rich league. While Impact Player rule is one of the key topics which will be discussed, retentions is even bigger topic, seeing the IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled to take place later this year.
Although there will be a clarity on several different points, according to recent reports BCCI is mulling to allow the retention of uncapped players. “A major time of the meeting is likely to be consumed in discussing retentions, which are likely to be not more than five or six in number, more time (five years from three) in frequency of the mega auction, an increase in purse and performance-based increments for a player,” a source close to BCCI said as mentioned by TOI.
BCCI likely to increase team purse to INR 120-125 Cr
In another major update, the BCCI is looking to increase the team purse to previous INR 100 Crore to INR 120-125 Crore along with allowing five to six player retentions. While several IPL franchises have time and again opened on increasing the team’s purse, one of the senior official of one of the IPL franchises told PTI, “I think that (increase of purse) is happening for sure. The standard increase should be anywhere between 20 to 25 percent and hence anything in the range of INR 120 Crore to INR 125 Crore will be a fair deal. Most franchises would agree to it.”
“Every franchise could be allowed to retain, say, two-three uncapped players from their squad in the 2024 IPL season under an additional slot. The franchises are likely to push for it. Almost all the franchises have developed certain uncapped players which they don’t want to lose since they have invested in then over the last two-three years,” a source informed as quoted by TOI.
This comes seeing the 2022 mega auction where the eight franchises were allowed to retain up to four players with a maximum of three Indians, two overseas players and two uncapped Indians.
