Despite playing a spectacular game of cricket and showing his selfless intent in the recently-concluded ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma failed to win the third World Cup title for India after losing to Australia in the final. Cricket experts across the world lauded Sharma's captaincy while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to discuss the 36-year-old's future in white-ball cricket.

After the completion of the 2023 ODI World Cup, teams across the world will resume their preparations for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the US in June next year. While Rohit's dream to win the World Cup for India shattered on Sunday, his participation in the next ODI World Cup looks difficult as he will be 40 at that time.

According to The Times of India, Rohit has told chief selector Ajit Agarkar and other officials about playing the T20 format and won't mind if he is not considered in the shortest format. Also, the BCCI will be eager to find a replacement for Rohit as Hardik Pandya was often touted to take the captaincy. However, due to Pandya being injury-prone, the BCCI will look for another option to lead Team India.

The Times of India quoted a BCCI source saying, "As of now, it seems Rohit will be focusing a lot of his energy on the Test format for the next cycle of the World Test Championship which runs till 2025. Grooming a captain for the longer formats is a key part of the agenda. With Hardik Pandya prone to injuries, selectors may look for options in ODIs."
