Rohit Sharma-led India lost the first two ODIs of the three-match series meaning they lose the series as well. India lost the first ODI while defending as they failed to take Bangladesh’s 10th wicket. Meanwhile, the Men in Blue could not chase 272 in their designated 50 overs in the second ODI, resulting in a series defeat for them.
These two defeats and the ten-wicket defeat to England in the T20 World Cup semifinal have made the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) anxious. The office bearers of the Indian cricket board are therefore planning to hold a review meeting with the leadership group in the Indian team.
While they were set to meet after the T20 World Cup itself, the unavailability of some of the officials resulted in the postponement of the meeting. But now as India have lost to seventh-ranked Bangladesh, the office bearers want to hold the meeting at the earliest. Head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, and former skipper Virat Kohli will sit in the meeting from Team India.
“We weren’t able to meet the Indian team before going to Bangladesh as some of the office bearers were busy but we will schedule it as soon as the team is back from Bangladesh. It has been an embarrassing performance and we didn’t expect this team to lose to Bangladesh,” a top BCCI official was quoted saying by the Indian Express.
The review meeting will look at the cause of these defeats and also the future roadmap for the team. A change in captaincy will also be discussed at the meeting. Rohit Sharma is set to retain the captaincy in ODIs and Tests with two important events coming up next year. However, Sharma might get replaced by Hardik Pandya as the T20I captain.
“Rohit is 35 and the BCCI may want to retain him as captain for the next year’s 50-over World Cup on home soil, with Pandya being groomed keeping in mind the next T20 World Cup in 2024 in the West Indies and United States. However, a future roadmap on captaincy will be clearer once the review meeting is held, a BCCI official said,” wrote Indian Express in its report.
