Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Monday, 11 December announced the central contracts for 2023-24 for both, men and women. However, there were a few surprise inclusions, some few big names were missing in the list, including the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Jason Holder, hard-hitter Kyle Mayers among others.
Cricket West Indies confirmed that the selections were based on thorough assessment of performances from the 2022-23 period, following the recommendations from the Selection Panels and the Board of Directors’. Additionally, three among the prominent players from the Caribbean, including Nicholas Pooran, Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers declined the contract but clarified on their availability to play T20Is.
Additionally, four new players have been offered a central contract for the first time, including left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, Keacy Carty, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze. “The players who have been offered contracts are among those who we expect to feature, as we look to build towards challenging for the top spot when we host and compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on home soil,” quoted West Indies Men’s Lead Selector, Desmond Haynes.
