Detroit Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham has been ruled out of the NBA 2022-23 season. The former No. 1 draft pick of Pistons, the star player will undergo a shin surgery before being fully fit for the 2023-24 season.

 

The 21-year-old, who has not appeared since November 9, 2022 will now miss the remainder of the season, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski. However, he is expected to make full recovery and be back with the team ahead of the 2023-24 training camp.

 

According to reports from Wojnarowski, the star guard had consulted several doctors after which the Pistons and Cunningham’s advisors decided that the season-ending procedure would be the best decision for the long term.

The Pistons coach has picked rookie point guard Jaden Ivey as the team’s lead ball handler going forward, filling the shoes of injured Cunningham.  


Talking about the 12 games he has appeared in, the 21-year-old has averaged 19.9 points with 6.2 rebounds and six assists. In 2021 as rookie, he averaged 17.4 points with 5.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists and later went on to uptick it during the second half with 21.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.5 assist.
