The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has announced the schedule for the Copa America 2024, which will be hosted by the United States for the second time in history. The tournament will kick off on June 20 and conclude with the final slated on July 14.
The last edition of the Copa America was held in Brazil in 2019, where Argentina won their 15th title by defeating Brazil 1-0 in the final. The next edition was supposed to be held in 2020 but was postponed to 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 16 nations will be taking part in the 2024 Copa América - 10 Conmebol teams along with the six best CONCACAF teams to emerge from the 2023/24 CONCACAF Nations League.
The 2024 Copa America will mark the second time that the tournament will be held in the United States, after the successful Centenario edition in 2016, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of CONMEBOL. Lionel Messi’s Argentina lost the final against Chile on penalties after the game finished in a goalless draw.
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez said that the 2024 Copa America will be a great opportunity to showcase the passion and talent of South American football to the world. Dominguez said, "We are very happy to bring this historic competition back to the United States, where we had a wonderful experience in 2016. We are confident that this new edition will invite fans to celebrate and live the passion that this competition makes us feel."
The host cities and venues for the 2024 Copa America have not been announced yet, but they are expected to be revealed soon. The draw for the groups and fixtures will also take place at a later date. Argentina and Brazil will start as favorites for the competition with the La Albiceleste hunting for their four consecutive international title.
