On September 8, Friday, at 23:11 local time, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck Morocco, the North African country, with the epicentre being the High Atlas Mountains, which is 71km south-west from the city of Marrakesh. The loss of lives and severe damage in the country led to help coming from all corners, including the sporting world, with Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest footballers of all-time, who reportedly provided refuge to the victims at his Marrakesh hotel.

The 38-year-old, who plays club football for Al-Nassr from Saudi Arabia, has been known for providing help to the victims of natural disasters in the past. During February of 2023, he had sent an aircraft filled with necessary resources to the survivors of the devastating earthquake in the Turkey and Syria region.

Notably, in the wake of the recent tragedy in Morocco on September 8, Cristiano Ronaldo also took to his official Instagram account to send out a story for the people who have lost their lives in the earthquake, while praying for them in the difficult times. It read, “My deepest condolences to the family and friends of all those who have lost their lives in the earthquake in Morocco. Sending love and prayers to all in Morocco at this very difficult time.”

The disaster in Morocco has led to 2,122 people getting killed and 2,421 getting injured as per latest update from the state-run broadcaster 2M on September 10, Sunday. It has been reported that this earthquake in the country’s centre is the strongest in more than 100 years, which wasn’t far away from the tourist and economic hub of Marrakech, according to the latest report from CNN.
