After losing the first two games of the IPL 2024 season, the Delhi Capitals registered their first win by 20 runs beating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings by runs . Playing at their second home ground in Vizag, the Capitals won the toss and started emphatically with the bat with the opening pair of David Warner and Prithvi Shaw going guns blazing.
The duo smashed 93 in 9.3 overs but the Super Kings finally broke through and picked up two quick wickets. CSK after these dismissals dried up the flow of runs with Matheesha Pathirana showing off his magnificent yorker bowling ability. But reducing DC from this situation captain Rishabh Pant stepped up and smashed his first half-century after his horrific car accident in December 2022.
Pant's heroics allowed DC to post a competitive 191-run total and brought this momentum in the second innings. Delhi's new ball attack led by Khaleel Ahmed and Ishant Sharma turned the game around as they reduced CSK to 7-2 in the first three overs.
Ajinkya Rahane and Daryll Mitchell tried to bring back Chennai into the contest but failed as Delhi tightened the screws, especially with Mukesh Kumar's brilliant death-bowling display. These efforts won Delhi this game but the crowd in Vizag were witness to a thrilling cameo by MS Dhoni, where Captain Cool smashed a 16-ball 37 with four fours and three sixes.
