Argentina defeated France at the FIFA World Cup 2022 Final to lift their title in the history of the tournament. The Albicelestes pipped the defending champions 4-2 in a penalty shootout to win a World Cup for the first time in 36 years. Lionel Messi was the man in focus on the night as the Argentine captain was possibly playing his last World Cup.

Messi made his presence felt as he scored a brace and also scored one of the four goals scored in the penalty shootout. But only Messi could not have won it for Argentina. It required the brilliance of Emiliano Martinez to snatch a win out of France’s grasp. The Argentine goalie made two incredible saves in the penalty shootout as well as a few brilliant saves throughout the game.

Martinez was brilliant in front of the net throughout the tournament and hence was awarded the Golden Glove. As is the case with Martinez, the Argentine goalie took the celebration too far as he made a lewd gesture after receiving the award. This also attracted a lot of criticism for Martinez from around the globe.

Now, the man himself has explained his gesture. As per a report in the New York Post, Martinez explained the reasoning to Argentine radio station La Red. He said: "I did it because the French booed me." He further went on to say, "Pride does not work with me."

All that I have dreamed of has been achieved: Martinez

The Aston Villa keeper then shed light on Argentina's fairy tale win. Martinez said that it felt like it was pre-destined. The 30-year-old also dedicated the win to his family. "It was a very complicated match, they came back to equalise in the game but it was our destiny to suffer," said the Aston Villa keeper.

"All that I have dreamed of has been achieved. I have no words for it. I was calm during the penalty shoot-out, and everything went as we wanted. I left very young for England. I dedicate this victory to all my family."
