Everton have received a 10-point deduction in the Premier League for breaching the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, which has put them in 19th place with just four points in the competition. After the ruling was confirmed, Everton called it “a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction,” while stating their intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League.

In the recent past, Leeds, Leicester, and Burnley have written to 777 Partners, the prospective new owners of Everton, warning them about their intention to sue them for damages if the guilty verdict came from the Premier League. Notably, these were the three clubs who got relegated from the English top division in the last two seasons while Everton narrowly survived the drop at their expense.
The statement from Premier League in regards to Everton receiving a 10-point deduction, the excerpts of which read, “Following a five-day hearing last month, the commission determined that Everton FC’s PSR calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5m, as contended by the Premier League, which exceeded the threshold of £105m permitted under the PSRs. The commission concluded that a sporting sanction in the form of a 10-point deduction should be imposed. That sanction has immediate effect.”
It led to Everton releasing a statement of their own, the excerpts of which read, “Everton Football Club is both shocked and disappointed by the ruling of the Premier League’s Commission. The Club believes that the Commission has imposed a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction. The Club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League. The appeal process will now commence and the Club’s case will be heard by an Appeal Board appointed pursuant to the Premier League’s rules in due course.”
