The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a heartwarming video from the Indian dressing room after R Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. As the third Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 concluded with a draw on Wednesday, Ashwin, India’s off-spinning legend, called time on his international career. The cricketer, who was featured in the second game of the ongoing series, finished his career as the second-highest wicket-taker in Test, sitting only behind legendary Anil Kumble.
Hours after Ashwin announced his retirement, the BCCI released an emotional video with Behind The Scenes (BTS) of how things unfolded at The Gabba. The video also showcased Australian spinner Nathan Lyon and skipper Pat Cummins gifting him a signed Australian jersey. Not only this, but the video also showcased Ashwin delivering an emotional speech in the Indian dressing room, and promised to back the side as a fan. The speech was followed by a cake-cutting ceremony, as the cricketer confirmed that he will fly back to India tomorrow, December 19.
Everybody’s time comes and it’s truly mine: Ravichandran Aswhin in his dressing room farewell speech
The 38-year-old gave an emotional farewell speech in the Indian dressing room and said that every player’s time will come. He said, “Even though I am not exhibiting it, it’s a truly emotional moment,” Ashwin began his speech in the dressing room. Honestly, it is easier to speak in the team huddle. Even though I am not exhibiting it, this is a very emotional moment. Thanks Rohit (Sharma), thanks Virat, thanks Gauti (Gambhir) bhai. I am so happy today.”
He added, “But, trust me guys, everybody’s time comes and it’s truly my time. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have built some great relationships, especially over the last 4-5 years. I am leaving behind some of my teammates who I have been playing with dearly. Every passing moment in the last four years, I have realised how much I value their relationship and value them as a player. I had a great time.”
Ashwin concluded by saying, “I will be taking a flight back home. But I will be tuned in to watch how well you guys go in Melbourne. I will be looking forward to each one of your performances. The international cricketer in me might have come to an end, but the cricket nut in me will never come to an end. All the very best. If at all, you guys need anything, I am just a phone call away.”
