Former India cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar has found himself in hot waters after he took to social media to back India Women despite their defeat in a must-win game against Australia in Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Team India, who kickstarted the tournament on a disappointing note, suffering a 58-run defeat against New Zealand, lost their final Group A match against defending champions, Australia by nine runs at the Sharjah Cricket Ground in Sharjah.
After the loss, which has put their campaign in the Women’s T20 World Cup on a cusp, Manjrekar took to social media to congratulate the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side for a tough fight. This gesture by Manjrekar has left the netizens visibly upset, slamming the former cricketer for his words.

Manjrekar, who has been vocal and expressive of his intentions, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a post which read, “No other team other than India would have come so close to the big target Aus set on a difficult pitch. I say, well done India! And again what a star Harman is!”
This post hasn’t sat down well among the netizens, setting the internet ablaze. While some called his comments “ridiculous”, a few others claimed that “an average player can only praise an average performance”.
