Talking about the 2022-23 season, Hyderabad FC is right on track to defend its title after earning a direct semi-final berth. The Nizams have secured the second spot in the points table behind ISL League Winner’s Shield holders Mumbai City FC. This season, Manolo Marquez’s men have won 12 and three games out of 18. Bartholomew Ogbeche has been the team’s scoring leader with eight goals in 18 games.
Like Hyderabad FC, East Bengal FC was handed a registration ban by the AIFF. The ban has been effective from January 1, 2023. The ban allows the club to sign new players including foreigners but doesn’t permit them to register any new players. The ban was imposed because of murky transfer dealings for Omid Singh an India-origin Iranian footballer who is currently playing for Naft Masjed Soleyman F.C. in Iran, on a two-year contract.
The Secretary General of the AIFF, Dr Shaji Prabhakaraan released a statement addressing this ban. It said, "This circular is to notify all the Member Associations and the stakeholders of the All India Football Federation that a ban on registration of new players has been imposed on East Bengal FC, a club registered under the Indian Football Association and currently participating in the Hero Indian Super League."
