Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon in the ongoing January transfer window for a whopping £80 million. Although Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who had been a part of Viktor Gyokeres success in the Portuguese league for the last couple of years, wanted to bring him in next summer rather than January, the desperation of saving the season has forced his and club hierarchy’s hand now.
Notably, as per the report from The Star, Ruben Amorim has told the Manchester United’s hierarchy that they can’t wait any longer to sign Viktor Gyokeres with their performances in the Premier League dwindling drastically last month, losing five of their last six matches. Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee are in line to potentially leave the club this month, especially with the latter not playing to his full potential after joining the club last summer.
Viktor Gyokeres could cost Manchester United £80 million
Viktor Gyokeres could cost Manchester United £80 million this January due to a release clause in his contract, but the move had to be sanctioned by INEOS and Glazers. Moreover, Sporting Lisbon would be looking to cash in on the full amount of the release clause if they are going to let the Swedish international leave midway into this season especially when he could go out on a slightly lesser fee next summer.
Over the last couple of years, Gyokeres and Amorim had a great partnership at Sporting, and it helped the player score a plethora of goals at the top level in Portugal after being a part of the English league football with Coventry City previously. He became the top-scorer in football for club and country with 62 goals in 2024, staying ahead of big players like Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Robert Lewandowski.
