Ahead of the Round of 16, Argentina suffers a massive injury blow as Angel Di Maria is set to remain doubtful for their fixture against Australia. The update about Di Maria’s fitness was given by the Argentine coach Luis Scaloni during a press conference earlier today.
Di Maria was subbed off with a suspected injury in the 59th minute during Argentina's 2-0 victory over Poland in their last Group C game. This win ensured their qualification for the RO16 where they will be facing Australia later on Saturday.
"Di Maria had discomfort. We will see the panorama of him tomorrow (Saturday). If he's fine, he'll play," Scaloni said in a press conference without giving further details. "Yesterday (Friday) was all about recovering and thinking about the upcoming game against Australia. We will see how players are doing in today's training and then decide the starting 11," he added.
Luis Scaloni was also in the news for his comments on the Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR) ahead of the Australia game. In the press conference, The Argentina manager expressed that he agreed with the views of Spain manager Luis Enrique, who wasn’t happy with some VAR results from the game against Japan.
"I think the same as what Luis Enrique said," Scaloni told in the press conference. "The first images are eloquent and then, if you analyze millimetrically, what is happening happens. We don't have much more to comment. It's difficult to digest because it's a very new thing and that's more of a shock."
He further continued, “If we had had time to assimilate it [it would be different], but this was sudden and we had a month for some tests, but it is what it is and it is for everyone. The lines, of course, should be drawn with a square so that they don't get twisted (laughs)".
