Several Sri Lanka cricketers have been under the scanner lately for violations in the recent past. Among them, the recent name which came into limelight is of former Sri Lankan off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake. As per the latest development, the 38-year-old has been arrested over match fixing charges.

The Sri Lanka off-spinner who is said to have attempted to fix games during 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL) has now been arrested after he surrendered to the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry.

The former cricketer had allegedly contacted two fellow cricketers via a telephone from Dubai to conspire in match-fixing activities. Additionally, the ex-cricketer was earlier refrained from travelling abroad after a Colombo court sanctioned orders in August 2023. The Controller General of Immigration and Emigration received a mandate from the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court to place the off-spinner on a three-month no-travel ban.

Furthermore, the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry had directed the Attorney General’s Department to fabricate criminal charges against Senanayake.

Talking about the 38-year-old off-spinner, Sachithra has featured in one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20Is for the country between 2012 and 2016. Since 2016, when he last competed for Sri Lanka, he has been playing domestic cricket on and off.
