The reigning MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia was involved in a horrific crash at the Catalunya Grand Prix on September 3, Sunday, following which his girlfriend Domizia Castagnini was spotted on camera breaking down in tears, before a Ducati team member consoled her. At the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the incident happened on lap one, which led to the Italian rider suffering serious injuries and getting hospitalised soon after.
Notably, the Catalunya Grand Prix began with Francesco Bagnaia in pole position, who got off the line to a fantastic start. But, on turn 2, he suddenly lost control of his bike, flew a few feet up in the air before crashing down on the track, while the other riders tried to avoid contact with him and his Ducati.
Brad Binder of KTM, who was also in the chasing pack, couldn’t get out of the way in time, running his bike over the legs of the Italian rider. The Ducati team, stationed at the paddock, including Domizia Castagnini were shocked at the moment, while the stewards scrambled to help the MotoGP world champion.
Francesco Bagnaia received treatment for his injuries on the track, before he was sent to the nearby hospital for further care. Later on, the Italian rider posted an update about his health on social media, sitting on the hospital bed with his thumb up.
The Medical Director of MotoGP, Dr Angel Charte revealed the details about the condition of Francesco Bagnaia to DAZN. He was quoted as saying, as per The Sun, “Pecco has had severe polytrauma, a motorbike ran over him in the femoral and tibial area. We have taken x-rays of this area and have detected a small injury that we don't know if it is current or old.”
“We need to do an urgent CAT scan and that is why we have sent him to the general hospital. At cranial, thoracic and abdominal levels, he has been normal at all times. He was conscious and oriented. The image we have seen is from conventional radiology, so it is difficult to be sure that there is no fracture. It is necessary to do a CAT scan,” he further added.
