24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open 2024 after his MRI scans showed a right knee injury. Djokovic underwent an MRI scan on his knee on Tuesday, June 4, and was waiting for results to decide on his continued participation in the French Open 2024. In his last-eight fixture, Djokovic was set to clash against Casper Ruud and was just three wins away from defending his title at the tournament.
Earlier in one of the press conferences, Djokovic had said that he had been feeling slight discomfort in his knee recently. Not only this but in his fourth-round clash against Francisco Cerundolo, the Serbian displayed some concerning signs of physical struggle. Not only this, but during his final set, Djokovic suffered a nasty fall on Court Philippe-Chartier which seemed to have intensified the pain.
Now with Djokovic retiring from the Ronald Garros, Jannik Sinner became the new world number 1. The Serbian had admitted in the press conference that he would consider withdrawing from the clay-court major depending on how serious the damage was to the right knee. He said, “For the last couple weeks I have had slight discomfort, I would call it, in the right knee, but I haven't had an injury that would be concerning me at all.”
He added, “It did disrupt me definitely in play. For two sets, two sets and a half, I didn't want to stay in the rally too long. Every time he would make sudden drop shots or change directions, I would not be feeling comfortable to do the running. At one point I didn't know, to be honest, whether I should continue or not with what's happening. I got the medications, and then after the third set was done, I asked for more medications, and I got them.”
