Crucial members of the Indian men's team like Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced retirements from the shortest format after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies.
But since the World Cup, many key members of the Indian team have been away from the game with a young squad being sent for the five-match T20I series to Zimbabwe. Then for the Sri Lanka tour, reports surfaced about the senior players extending their break ahead of a packed cricketing season.
Gambhir has requested senior players to be available for Sri Lanka ODIs: Reports
As per Indian Express, the senior players have agreed to the new head coach Gautam Gambhir's request to play in the three-match ODIs as it will be his first series as a coach. Further, all-rounder Hardik Pandya will play only the T20Is and won’t be part of the ODI squad. The report also confirmed that the senior selection committee has decided to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the short series. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant will be part of both the Indian squads.
Riyan Parag and Shivam are likely to be part of ODIs and T20Is
Further, the report revealed that all-rounders Riyan Parag and Shivam are likely to get picked for the ODI and T20I while his IPL teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal will be part of the T20Is only. Similarly, Mumbai batters Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer will only be part of the T20I and ODI squads respectively.
