The ugly Gambhir vs Kohli altercation that took place on May 1, Monday during the Lucknow Super Giants vs Royal Challengers Bangalore in Lucknow is unfolding old incidents and twists each day. While the internet is divided in opinion, former cricketer-turned commentator, Irfan Pathan has recalled the rivalry between Gautam Gambhir and former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Speaking on the rivalry between Dhoni and Gambhir, Pathan recalled an old game of Kolkata Knight Riders against the Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL 2016. Talking about Dhoni’s innings, he said that Gambhir had surrounded Dhoni with fielders. He said, "Gautam Gambhir played with the ego of MS Dhoni when he was the captain of KKR. He was the only one who succeeded in rattling him for years.” Referring to Gambhir's strategy, he added, "MS was rattled to the core by the field setting."
Gambhir has a history of bringing-in the fielders closely whenever MS Dhoni would come to bat. He also used his spinners like Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla, and Shakib Al Hasan during 2015 to 2017. Needless to say, the technique always worked with Dhoni failing to score runs. Needless to say, MS Dhoni is known in the cricketing world for his grand finishing skills and leading the team brilliantly. However, one more trait of this player that makes him everyone’s favourite is how he keeps himself calm and composed on the ground. However, as per Irfan Pathan, only Gautam Gambhir’s tactics managed to get into Dhoni’s mind.
Notably, Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir got into a verbal spat at the Lucknow Super Giants’ clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 1, Monday. They have been charged with 100% of their match fee for breaching the IPL code of conduct .
