West Indies’ batting maestro Brian Lara picked India’s emerging batting star Shubman Gill to surpass his towering records. Considered one of the greatest to have played the game of cricket, Lara has the record of playing 501* in the County Championship in England. Not only this, but he is also the only cricketer till date to hit 400 in a Test match. Along with it, the West Indies great also holds the record for the highest individual score in first-class cricket.
Brian Lara broke Sir Garfield Sobers’ 365* runs in Test cricket in 1958 and while everyone thought it couldn’t be broken, 36 years later against England in 1994, Lara surpassed it. He scored 375 and then two months later he scored 501* in the County Championship in England. Several cricketers have played the game, but no one could come closer to him in terms of individual records.
Shubman can break both my records: Brian Lara
The 54-year-old said that his records could be broken and not only said his world record individual score could be bettered but also chose the individual who can do so. Lara picked the young Indian batter, Shubman Gill for surpassing his feats. He said, "Shubman Gill can break both my records. Gill is the most talented batter in this new generation. He will rule cricket in the coming years. I believe he will go on to break many big records.”
He said further, "If Gill plays County cricket, then he can break my 501*. In Test cricket, he can surely go past 400. Cricket has changed a lot, especially batting. Batters play t20 leagues across the globe. IPL has changed everything. The scoring rate has gone up. So you will keep seeing big scores. Shubman will score big, mark my words.”
