The last two games in T20 WC 2022 between India-Bangladesh and Pakistan-South Africa were decided with DLS method due to rain interruption. DLS method is designed to calculate the target score (number of runs needed to win) for the team batting second in a limited overs cricket match which gets interrupted by weather (or) any other circumstances.
This D/L method was officially adopted by ICC in the year 1999 and later in 2014 it was renamed as DLS method after the involvement of professor named Stern. This method adjusts the target based on resources left for team. The resources taken into account are number of overs and wickets left for a team in a game interruption.
Assume the team batting first is team-1 and team batting second is team-2 then team-2's DLS par score is calculated as (team-1 score)*(team-2's resources left)/(team-1's resource left).
If the first innings gets completed in an uninterrupted way then team-2's DLS par score will simply be (team-1 score)*(team-2's resource left).
The below is one of table used for DLS resource calculation, which is calculated based on wickets and overs left for a particular team.
Now in few instances, G50 value is used if first innings has many rain interruptions since the team batting first would have batted first few overs conservatively thinking they have more resources. G50 value initially was 225 till 2002 and post 2002 till 2009 the value of G50 was changed to 235 and post 2009, the G50 value was changed to 245.
For games which have many 1st innings interruption target is set as team-1 total + G50* (R2-R1) / 100 where R1 & R2 are resources left for team-1 & team-2 respectively.
Here in this article, We will have look at some of the D/L case that happened in 2003 WC games and later we will interlink with 2022 T20 WC games.
SA vs SL 2003 World Cup game
Sri Lanka batting first posted 268/9 in 50 overs and South Africa in 2nd innings posted a total of 229/6 in 45 overs and game got abandoned due to rain.
SL had 100% resources in full game but SA batted just 45 overs only.
SA team resources at start of innings - 100% (50 overs and 10 wickets)
SA team resources left when game got abandoned - 14.3% (5 overs and 4 wickets)
SA's par total = SL total * Resource utilized by SA team
SA's par total = 268 * (100-14.3) = 229.67
Hence, 230 was fixed as target for South Africa and game ended as tie according to D/L rule.
Note:- 14.3% is derived from old D/L resource table when SA had 5 overs and 4 wickets left.
AUS vs NED 2003 World Cup game
Initially. the game was reduced to 47 overs per innings for both sides.
- Australia smashed 109/2 in 25 overs and again the game got interrupted due to rain. Once the innings restarted match was reduced to 44 overs for Australia.
- Australia scored 123/2 in 28 overs and again game got interrupted due to rain, thus the game was reduced to 36 overs per innings for both sides.
- Australia finished with a score of 170/2 in 36 overs.
Now, Australia would have batted more conservatively in first 25 (or) 28 overs thinking they have more overs at end of game, thus to make the game more fair Netherlands team will have higher target as they would be well aware of having the resource of just 36 overs in advance.
Resource left for Australia in start of the innings : 97.1% (47 overs and 10 wickets) - R
Resource left for Australia after interruption (109/2 in 25 overs) : 55.8% (22 overs and 8 wickets) - R1
Resource left for Australia after restart post game got reduced to 44 overs : 50.5% (19 overs and 8 wickets) - R2
Resource left for Australia after 2nd interruption (123/2 in 28 overs) : 44.7% (16 overs and 8 wickets) - R3
Resource left for Australia after restart post game got reduced to 36 overs : 25.5% (8 overs and 8 wickets) - R4
Resource available for Australian team (Ra) will be R - (R1-R2) - (R3-R4) = 97.1 - (55.8-50.5) - (44.7-25.5) = 72.6%
Resource available for Netherlands team (Rn) will be 84.1% (36 overs and 10 wickets).
NED's par total = AUS total + G50 * (Rn-Ra) / 100 = 170 + 235 * (84.1-72.6)/100 = 197.025.
Target for Netherlands was set as 198 despite Australia scoring 170 only in same 36 overs.
Note:- R, R1, R2, R3, R4, Ra & Rn values are just based on D/L resource table.
Now, in the ongoing T20 WC 2022 games
IND vs BAN game
India posted a total of 184/6 in 20 overs without any interruption. In the 2nd innings when Bangladesh were at 66/0 in 7 overs game was interrupted due to rain and DLS par score was considered as 49 runs.
Ban target (7 overs) in DLS = 184 * (100-Rb) / 100 = 49.
Rb is the resource available for Bangladesh.
According to this calculation resource left for Bangladesh (Rb) team will be 73.36 with 13 overs and 10 wickets left in game.
Resource left for Bangladesh in start of innings : 100% (20 overs and 10 wickets)
Resource left for Bangladesh after interruption : R1 (13 overs and 10 wickets)
Resource left for Bangladesh after restart post game got reduced to 16 overs : R2 (9 overs and 10 wickets)
Ban target in DLS (16 overs) = 184 * (100-(R1-R2)) / 100.
R1 value will be 73.36 same as Rb.
looking at calculation, value of R2 in DLS table would be between 54.88 to 55.42 as target set for Bangladesh was 151 runs in the 2nd innings from 16 overs.
Note:- R1, R2 and Rb calculated based on DLS resource table
SA vs PAK game
Pakistan posted a total of 185/9 in 20 overs without any interruption. In the 2nd innings when South Africa were at 69/4 in 9 overs the game got interrupted due to rain and DLS par score was considered as 84 runs.
SA target (9 overs) in DLS = 185 * (100-Rs) / 100 = 84.
Rs is the resource available for South Africa.
According to this calculation resource left for South Africa (Rs) team will be 54.59 with 11 overs and 6 wickets left in game.
Resource left for South Africa in start of innings : 100% (20 overs and 10 wickets)
Resource left for South Africa after interruption : R1 (11 overs and 6 wickets)
Resource left for South Africa after restart post game got reduced to 14 overs : R2 (5 overs and 6 wickets)
SA target in DLS (14 overs) = 185*(100-(R1-R2))/100 = 142
R1 value will be 54.59 same as Rs.
looking at calculation, value of R2 in DLS table would be between 30.806 to 31.346 as target set for South Africa was 142 in the 2nd innings from 14 overs.
Note:- Rs, R1, R2 values are calculated based on D/L resource table value
